Iveco PC2ED – ECM: Electrical Failure in Water Pump Actuator Circuit

Issue description

An electrical failure has been detected in the circuit associated with the water pump actuator, which typically refers to an auxiliary electric water pump or a coolant control valve rather than the primary mechanical pump. This indicates a potential open circuit, short to ground, or short to power in the device controlling engine coolant flow.

Applies to these machines

  • Daily
  • Stralis
  • Eurocargo
  • EuroTrakker
  • Tector

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the auxiliary water pump and any coolant control valves for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  2. Using a multimeter, verify that the component's electrical connector is receiving the correct voltage (typically 12V) and has a solid ground connection

  3. Scan for other related fault codes that could provide more context to the failure

  4. Listen for component operation to see if the auxiliary pump is running or the solenoid is actuating

  5. Check for coolant leaks around the auxiliary pump or valves, which can indicate a physical failure of the component itself

Repair steps

  1. Drain the coolant

Partially or fully drain the cooling system to a level below the component being replaced to minimize coolant loss.

  2. Disconnect electrical connector

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty actuator.

  3. Remove hoses

Loosen the hose clamps and remove the coolant hoses from the component. Be prepared for some residual coolant to spill.

  4. Remove the component

Unbolt and remove the faulty auxiliary pump or control valve from its mounting bracket.

  5. Install the new component

Mount the new part, reconnect the hoses and tighten the clamps, and plug in the electrical connector.

  6. Refill and bleed the cooling system

Refill the cooling system with the correct type of coolant and follow the manufacturer's procedure to bleed any air from the system.

  7. Clear fault codes and test

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool and run the engine to verify that the fault does not return and that the cooling and heating systems are functioning correctly.
