PC2ED

Iveco PC2ED – ECM: Pump Actuator Position Deviation

Issue description

The fuel control actuator (FCA) on the high-pressure fuel pump is not moving to the position commanded by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM constantly monitors the actuator's position to precisely control the amount of fuel entering the high-pressure pump, which regulates fuel rail pressure. When the actual position deviates from the commanded position, the ECM flags a fault. This condition can lead to hard starting or no-start conditions, rough or unstable idling, loss of engine power, especially under load, hesitation or surging during acceleration, and illumination of the EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) or check engine light.

Applies to these machines

  • Daily

Check the cause

  1. Verify the low-pressure fuel system is supplying adequate fuel to the high-pressure pump (check for clogged fuel filters, restrictions in fuel lines, and proper lift pump operation)

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel control actuator for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor live data and compare the 'commanded' fuel rail pressure with the 'actual' fuel rail pressure

  4. Perform an actuator electrical test: with the engine off, unplug the FCA wiring connector. On engine start-up, rail pressure should jump to its maximum value (around 26,000 psi), indicating a failing FCA

  5. Perform a continuity test on the wiring between the ECM and the actuator to rule out breaks or shorts in the circuit

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize fuel system

Depressurize the high-pressure fuel system following the manufacturer's specific procedure, which may involve using a scan tool or carefully loosening a high-pressure line fitting.

  2. Access the actuator

Locate the fuel control actuator on the high-pressure fuel pump. Remove any obstructing components such as intake manifolds or brackets to gain access.

  3. Remove the old actuator

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the two or three mounting screws (often Torx head) and carefully pull the actuator out of the pump body.

  4. Install the new actuator

Clean the mounting surface on the pump. Lubricate the O-rings on the new actuator with clean diesel fuel or a suitable lubricant, insert it into the pump, and tighten mounting screws to the specified torque.

  5. Reassemble and prime

Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall any components removed for access. Prime the fuel system according to manufacturer instructions to remove any air.

  6. Final system check

Start the engine and check for fuel leaks. Use a scan tool to clear fault codes and verify that actual and commanded fuel pressures are aligned.
