PC2ED

Iveco PC2ED – ECM/EDC: System Failure Detected in Water Pump Actuator

Issue description

A system failure has been detected related to the water pump actuator, indicating a potential problem with coolant circulation. In conventional systems, this points to a mechanical water pump failure leading to overheating. On newer models equipped with electronically controlled cooling components, the fault could lie with a variable flow water pump actuator, an electromagnetic fan clutch, or its control circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Daily
  • Stralis
  • Eurocargo
  • Trakker
  • Eurostar
  • Eurotech

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual inspection for coolant leaks around the water pump and engine block.

  2. Listen for unusual whining or squealing noises from the front of the engine, which indicates a failing water pump bearing.

  3. Monitor the engine temperature gauge for any signs of overheating due to a lack of coolant circulation.

  4. Check for air pockets in the cooling system, which can prevent proper circulation.

  5. Inspect related cooling components including the thermostat, radiator, and cooling fan for faults that mimic water pump failure.

  6. If accessible, inspect the water pump impeller to see if it is loose or damaged (may require partial disassembly).

Repair steps

  1. Drain the coolant

Place a container under the radiator and open the drain plug to empty the cooling system.

  2. Remove components for access

Depending on the model, remove the radiator, fan, fan shroud, and drive belts as necessary to access the water pump.

  3. Remove the old water pump

Loosen and remove the bolts securing the water pump to the engine block. Disconnect the pump from other components, such as the thermostat housing, if required.

  4. Clean the mating surface

Thoroughly clean the engine block surface where the new water pump will be mounted, removing any old gasket material or sealant.

  5. Install the new water pump

Place the new gasket on the water pump and mount the pump to the engine block. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reassemble components

Reinstall any components that were removed for access, such as the drive belts, fan, and radiator.

  7. Refill the cooling system

Close the radiator drain plug and fill the system with the correct type and amount of coolant.

  8. Bleed the system

Start the engine and let it run with the heater on high to bleed any air from the system. Top off the coolant as needed.
