PC2ED

Iveco PC2ED – ECU: Abnormal Friction or Sticky Pump

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the electronically controlled water pump actuator is requiring excessive effort to operate. This indicates abnormal friction within the pump, sticking, or stalling, often resulting in a deviation between the commanded and actual position of the pump. This condition can lead to engine overheating or inconsistent cabin heating.

Applies to these machines

  • Stralis
  • Trakker
  • Eurocargo
  • Case
  • Kobelco

Check the cause

  1. Scan for all active and stored fault codes, noting any related to the cooling system, sensors, or CAN bus communication

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the water pump actuator for corrosion, moisture ingress, damaged pins, or chafed/broken wires

  3. Verify the water pump actuator is receiving the correct supply voltage and has a solid ground connection using a multimeter

  4. Perform an actuator test using a diagnostic scan tool to command the water pump to run, listening for motor activation and observing coolant circulation

  5. Check the cooling system integrity, ensuring it is full, properly bled of air, and free of restrictions (low coolant or airlocks can mimic pump failure)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the Battery

Before beginning any work on the electrical system, disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent short circuits or damage to electronic components.

  2. Drain the Cooling System

Place a suitable container under the radiator drain plug and drain the engine coolant.

  3. Remove the Serpentine Belt

Release the tension on the serpentine belt using the automatic tensioner and remove the belt from the water pump pulley.

  4. Disconnect Electrical Connector

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the water pump actuator. Inspect it again for any damage that may need to be addressed.

  5. Remove Hoses and Components

Disconnect the coolant hoses attached to the water pump housing. It may also be necessary to remove other components like the alternator or belt tensioner to gain access.

  6. Unbolt and Remove the Water Pump

Remove the mounting bolts securing the water pump actuator assembly to the engine block and carefully remove the pump.

  7. Clean the Mating Surface

Thoroughly clean the engine block surface where the new pump will be mounted. Ensure it is free of old gasket material and corrosion.

  8. Install the New Water Pump Actuator

Install the new water pump assembly with a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  9. Reassemble Components

Reinstall any components that were removed for access, reconnect the coolant hoses and the electrical connector to the new actuator.

  10. Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

Route the serpentine belt correctly over all pulleys and release the tensioner.

  11. Refill and Bleed the Cooling System

Refill the cooling system with the manufacturer-specified coolant type. Start the engine and let it run with the heater on high to bleed any air from the system. Top up the coolant as necessary.

  12. Clear Fault Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the PC2ED fault code from the ECU memory. Start the engine, let it reach operating temperature, and check for leaks. Perform another scan to ensure the fault does not return.
