Iveco PC2ED – Water Pump Controller: CAN-Receive Fault from Water Pump Actuator
Issue description
The system has detected a loss or corruption of the CAN bus communication signal from the electronically controlled water pump actuator. The signal is not being properly transmitted or received by the Water Pump Controller, which expects specific data packets (including status, actual position, fault codes, motor effort, and temperature). This communication breakdown can compromise the engine's cooling system performance.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Stralis
- Eurocargo
- Trakker
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- FPT Tier 4B / Stage IV engines
- Cursor engines
Check the cause
Scan all vehicle control modules for other active or pending CAN bus communication fault codes (U-codes) to rule out a broader network issue
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU, the Water Pump Controller, and the water pump actuator for chafing, corrosion, pinched wires, or loose pins
Verify the water pump controller and actuator have a stable power supply and a solid ground connection
Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the battery disconnected at the diagnostic port or water pump controller connector (should read approximately 60 Ohms; 120 Ohms indicates an open circuit/missing resistor, while significantly lower indicates a short)
Perform a CAN Bus Voltage Test with the ignition on (CAN High to ground should be 2.5-3.0 V; CAN Low to ground should be 2.0-2.5 V)
Repair steps
Isolate the faulty component
If wiring, power, and ground are confirmed good, disconnect modules one by one and re-check the CAN bus resistance and voltage to determine if the fault lies with the water pump actuator/controller or another module on the bus.
Address wiring issues
If any wiring faults are found during the diagnostic checks, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.
Replace water pump assembly
If diagnostic tests point to an internal failure of the water pump actuator or its integrated controller, replace the complete water pump assembly.
Clear fault codes and test
Reconnect the battery, clear all fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and start the engine. Allow the vehicle to run to verify that the cooling system is operating correctly, the engine maintains normal operating temperature, and the fault code does not return.
