JCB 0x00 – ECM or EEM: Intake Manifold 2 Temp Sensor Plausibility

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a signal plausibility fault related to the Intake Manifold 2 temperature sensor. This indicates that while the sensor's signal is present, its output voltage is not logical or consistent with expected operating conditions when compared to other engine parameters (such as coolant temperature and ambient air temperature).

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • 4CX
  • JS Series
  • JS140
  • JS200
  • JS205
  • Dieselmax series
  • Ecomax series
  • telescopic handlers

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the intake manifold temperature sensor for signs of damage, chafing, melting, or fraying.

  2. Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and check for corrosion (green or white powder), bent pins, or a loose connection.

  3. Clear the fault codes with a diagnostic tool and restart the machine. If the code reappears immediately, it often points to a hard electrical fault in the wiring or connector.

  4. Perform a resistance test on the sensor using a multimeter. Resistance should change smoothly with temperature (you can use a heat gun or hair dryer to gently warm the sensor). A generic sensor might read between 2.40kΩ and 2.62kΩ at 20°C/68°F.

  5. Perform a voltage test by back-probing the signal wire with the ignition on (engine off). Voltage should be between 0.7 to 4 volts and fluctuate with temperature. Verify the 5-volt reference supply from the ECM is present and stable.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the fault

Perform the diagnostic checks to confirm whether the fault lies with the sensor itself, the wiring, or the ECM.

  2. Repair wiring and connectors

If the wiring or connector is found to be damaged, repair or replace the affected section. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  3. Replace the sensor

If the sensor fails the resistance or voltage tests, replace it. The sensor is typically threaded into the intake manifold.

  4. Final system check

After replacing the sensor or repairing the wiring, clear the fault codes from the ECM. Start the engine and monitor the live data from the intake manifold temperature sensor with a diagnostic tool to ensure it is providing plausible readings.
