JCB 0x00 – ECU: AMF High Side Driver Fault: Short Circuit To Ground

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short circuit to ground in the High Side Driver circuit that supplies operating voltage to the Air Mass Flow (AMF/MAF) sensor. This means the power supply wire has an unintended connection to the chassis or a ground wire, preventing the sensor from receiving the correct voltage to operate. This critical electrical fault prevents proper measurement of incoming air, typically triggering a 'SERVICE' or 'STOP NOW' warning and causing a significant engine power reduction of up to 60% torque.

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • JS220
  • 531-70
  • TM320
  • TM420

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the MAF sensor for chafing, melting, or cuts, especially where it may rub against engine components

  2. Inspect the MAF sensor electrical connector for corrosion (green/white powder), bent pins, or a loose fit

  3. Check the air intake ducting between the air filter housing and engine intake for cracks, splits, or loose clamps

  4. Use a multimeter to check the MAF sensor power supply wire for 0 volts (indicating a short to ground)

  5. Verify good continuity between the ground wire pin at the connector and the battery's negative terminal

  6. Inspect the signal wire for any shorts to ground

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Before starting any electrical repair, disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Locate MAF sensor

Find the MAF sensor situated in the air intake tube, between the air filter box and the throttle body/intake manifold.

  3. Test the circuit

Disconnect the MAF sensor connector. Turn the ignition ON (engine off). Using a multimeter set to DC volts, probe the power supply pin in the harness-side connector. A shorted circuit will measure near 0 volts instead of the expected 5V or 12V.

  4. Isolate the short

Disconnect the main connector at the ECU. Using a multimeter set to resistance (Ohms), check for continuity between the power supply pin at the MAF sensor connector and a known good chassis ground. Continuity confirms a short to ground exists in the wiring harness. No continuity indicates a potential internal ECU fault.

  5. Repair or replace wiring

If a short is located in the harness, carefully repair the damaged section or replace the harness if the damage is extensive.

  6. Replace MAF sensor

If the wiring is confirmed to be good but electrical issues persist, the MAF sensor itself may be internally shorted. Replace the sensor and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Clear fault codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool like JCB ServiceMaster to clear the fault codes and verify the repair was successful.
