JCB 0x3D – Main vehicle ECU or instrument cluster: CAN Bus Message Error for Environment Pressure from Engine ECU

Issue description

The Engine ECU has detected a missing or invalid message from the coolant temperature sensor on the CAN bus network. This communication failure prevents the ECU from accurately monitoring the engine's coolant temperature, which can lead to incorrect engine operation or trigger protective measures like an engine derate (limp mode) to prevent overheating damage.

Check the cause

  1. Record and clear the fault code, then operate the machine to see if it returns immediately to differentiate between a hard fault and an intermittent code

  2. Ensure the battery is fully charged (above 12.5V for a 12V system) and that all battery terminals and ground straps are clean and tight

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the barometric pressure sensor, as well as the main CAN bus harness, for rubbing, chafing, melting, or physical damage

  4. Unplug and inspect electrical connectors for the Engine ECU and the barometric pressure sensor for corrosion, bent or broken pins, and moisture intrusion

  5. With the machine powered off, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low wires at the diagnostic port (a healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 Ohms)

  6. Use the JCB Electronic Service Tool to monitor live data and compare the barometric pressure reading with actual atmospheric pressure for your altitude

  7. Using a multimeter, check the sensor's 5V reference voltage supply, ground, and signal wires according to the service manual

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and connectors

If visual inspection reveals damaged wiring or corroded connectors, clean with electrical contact cleaner, repair, or replace these sections first as this is the most common cause of CAN bus failures.

  2. Isolate the faulty component

Attempt to communicate directly with the Engine ECU using a diagnostic tool. If communication fails, troubleshoot the ECU power and ground supplies. If it communicates but pressure data is absent, the fault is likely the sensor or its dedicated wiring.

  3. Replace barometric pressure sensor

If wiring is intact, CAN resistance is correct, and the sensor is identified as the root cause, replace the barometric pressure sensor.

  4. Verify repair

Clear all fault codes, start the machine, and re-check for any active or pending codes to confirm the communication error is resolved.
