B1002

JCB B1002 – Cluster or MECU: Alternator Not Charging

Issue description

The system has detected that the alternator is not providing sufficient charge to the machine's electrical system. The ECU monitors the alternator's output, and if the voltage is too low while the engine is running, it triggers this fault. This condition can lead to a drained battery, resulting in starting problems, poor performance of electrical components, and potential system shutdowns.

Applies to these machines

  • Tracked and Wheeled Excavators
  • JS Series
  • 8080
  • 8056
  • Telehandlers
  • Loadalls
  • Backhoe Loaders
  • 3CX
  • 214

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery health: Check terminals for corrosion, ensure they are clean and tight, and test state of charge (should read approximately 12.6 volts with engine off).

  2. Inspect the alternator drive belt: Look for a loose, worn, or broken belt that would prevent the alternator from spinning correctly.

  3. Check wiring and connections: Visually inspect all wiring connected to the alternator for frayed, burnt, or broken wires, paying close attention to the main power cable and excitation circuit connector.

  4. Test alternator output voltage: With the engine running at high idle, measure DC voltage across battery terminals (should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts).

  5. Check for blown fuses: Inspect the main fuse box for blown fuses related to the charging system (often a 40-60A fuse near the battery).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Before beginning any repair work on the charging system, disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits.

  2. Test the excitation circuit

If an 'Alternator Excitation Open Circuit' is suspected, check for voltage at the excitation wire terminal on the alternator with the ignition key in the 'ON' position (engine off). No voltage indicates a wiring issue or ECU/Cluster fault.

  3. Perform internal component tests

Measure excitation field resistance (typical reading 10 to 15 ohms). Inspect brushes and slip rings for wear after removing the rear cover. Test the rectifier/diode pack with a multimeter set to the diode function.

  4. Remove and replace the alternator

If confirmed faulty, loosen the tensioner and remove the drive belt. Disconnect electrical connectors and mounting bolts. Install the new alternator, tighten bolts to spec, reconnect wiring, reinstall and tension the drive belt, and reconnect the battery.

  5. Verify the repair

Start the engine and re-test the voltage at the battery terminals to confirm the new alternator is charging correctly (between 13.5V and 14.5V). Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.
