B1002

JCB B1002 – Cluster: Alternator Excitation Open Circuit

Issue description

The system has detected an open circuit in the alternator's excitation circuit. This circuit is crucial for turning on the alternator's magnetic field to produce electrical output. An open circuit prevents the alternator from being properly energized, leading to a failure to charge the battery and potential power supply issues for the machine's electrical systems.

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • 4CX
  • Loadall

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the instrument cluster and the alternator for frayed or broken wires, loose connections, or corrosion

  2. Inspect fuses related to the charging system and instrument cluster for any blown fuses

  3. Perform a continuity test on the alternator excitation wire between the alternator connector and the corresponding pin on the instrument cluster connector

  4. With the ignition on and engine off, perform a voltage test at the alternator's excitation terminal to ensure a small voltage is present to excite the field

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring

If a break or damage is found in the excitation wire, splice in a new section of wire of the same gauge. Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.

  2. Clean or replace connectors

Clean corroded connectors thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner. Replace connectors if they are severely damaged.

  3. Replace alternator

If wiring and connectors are in good condition, the internal voltage regulator or field windings may have an open circuit. Replace the alternator assembly.

  4. Clear fault codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the B1002 fault code from the Cluster module's memory.

  5. Verify repair

Start the engine and check the instrument cluster for warning lights. Use a multimeter to verify the alternator is charging the battery at 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Alternator

Specific part number depends on machine model and engine configuration; consult JCB parts catalog with serial number

  • Wiring Harness or Connectors

Model-dependent; replace if damaged beyond repair

  • Fuses

Replace with correct amperage rating if blown
