P0002

JCB P0002 – ECU: Rail Pressure Control Error (Pressure Error Too Low)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the actual fuel pressure in the common rail is below the target pressure commanded. The system is unable to build or maintain adequate fuel pressure for proper engine operation, indicating a performance issue or error in the fuel volume regulator's control circuit. This typically triggers a Torque Reduction or Limp Home mode to protect the engine from potential damage, and may lead to an engine stop.

Applies to these machines

  • JS175W
  • JS190
  • JS200
  • JS200W
  • JS210
  • JS220
  • JS235
  • JS240
  • JS260
  • JZ235
  • JZ255
  • Loadall Telescopic Handlers (Tier 4i)
  • 3CX
  • 4CX

  • TM310
  • TM310S
  • TM310WM

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes related to fuel pressure, injector circuits, or sensor voltage using a diagnostic scanner like JCB ServiceMaster

  2. Ensure there is sufficient, clean, and uncontaminated fuel in the tank

  3. Inspect fuel lines for restrictions, kinks, blockages, or air ingress (loose fittings or cracked lines)

  4. Check for a clogged or dirty fuel filter

  5. Test the low-pressure lift pump performance (delivery should be approximately 1.2 liters per cycle)

  6. Visually inspect wiring harnesses and electrical connectors for the rail pressure sensor and fuel volume regulator (IMV) for damage, corrosion, chafing, or loose connections

Repair steps

  1. Scan and record faults

Connect a diagnostic tool to read and record all active and stored fault codes and their freeze-frame data. Clear the codes and run the machine to see if P0002 returns immediately.

  2. Perform preliminary checks

Complete all the diagnostic checks listed in the section above (fuel level, quality, filters, visual wiring inspection).

  3. Test low-pressure fuel system

Test the lift pump's flow rate to ensure the high-pressure pump is receiving adequate fuel. A pressure gauge can be used to verify pressure from the low-pressure side.

  4. Inspect and test Fuel Volume Regulator (IMV)

Using a multimeter, check for correct voltage and ground at the IMV connector according to the manufacturer's specifications. Test the resistance of the IMV itself and compare it to the specified values in the service manual.

  5. Inspect and test Rail Pressure Sensor

Monitor the live data for the rail pressure sensor at key-on and while cranking. Check the sensor's wiring for 5V supply, ground, and signal continuity back to the ECU.

  6. Component replacement

If the fuel filters are old or contaminated, replace them. If the lift pump fails the flow test, it should be replaced. If the IMV or rail pressure sensor is found to be faulty through electrical testing, replace the component.

  7. Final verification

After replacing any parts, clear all fault codes and run the machine under load to ensure the repair is successful and the P0002 code does not reappear. In rare cases, a faulty ECU could be the cause if all other components and wiring test correctly.
