P0002

JCB P0002 – ECU: Rail Pressure Control Error (Pressure Error Too High)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the fuel pressure in the common rail is significantly higher than the commanded target pressure. This indicates an inability to properly regulate fuel volume and pressure, which can negatively affect the proper operation of the engine's fuel system and lead to performance issues.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4i
  • Tier 4 Final (T4F)
  • EcoMax
  • Dieselmax 444
  • 531-70
  • 535-125
  • 416
  • 412S

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for the fuel rail pressure sensor, Inlet Metering Valve (IMV), and high-pressure pump for damage, corrosion, chafing, or loose connections

  2. Check for other related fault codes using a diagnostic scanner to provide more context

  3. Analyze live data to compare the actual fuel rail pressure with the desired (commanded) fuel rail pressure

  4. Check fuel quality and filters to ensure fuel is clean and not contaminated

  5. Check the lift pump delivery rate to rule out issues on the low-pressure side of the fuel system

Repair steps

  1. Stop and cool engine

Ensure the engine is stopped and has completely cooled down before beginning any work on the high-pressure fuel system.

  2. Repair wiring and connectors

If any damage was found during the visual inspection, repair or replace the affected wiring or connectors. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  3. Test and replace Inlet Metering Valve (IMV)

The IMV is a primary suspect. Use a JCB-specific diagnostic tool to actuate the IMV and monitor its response. If determined to be faulty, replace the IMV located on the high-pressure fuel pump.

  4. Test and replace fuel rail pressure sensor

Compare the pressure reading from the sensor via a scan tool to a reading from a calibrated mechanical pressure gauge connected to the fuel rail. Replace the sensor if there is a significant discrepancy.

  5. Test and replace high-pressure relief valve

Check the relief valve for leaks when it should be closed and verify its opening pressure. If it is stuck closed or its opening pressure is too high, replace the valve.

  6. Clear codes and retest

After replacing any components, clear the fault codes from the ECU and run the engine to verify the fault does not return.
