P0003

JCB P0003 – ECM: Fuel Volume Regulator Circuit Low Signal

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage signal in the control circuit of the fuel volume regulator (FVR). This indicates the voltage is below the manufacturer's specified range, which disrupts the ECM's ability to manage fuel pressure and affects the proper operation of the fuel delivery system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Fuel Volume Regulator's electrical connector and wiring harness for corrosion, damage, frayed wires, loose connections, or pinched wires

  2. Use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any other fault codes that may provide additional clues

  3. Check fuel supply and filters (including inline filters) for blockages or restrictions

  4. Test for proper voltage and ground at the FVR connector with the ignition on using a multimeter

  5. Test the resistance of the Fuel Volume Regulator and compare to manufacturer specifications

  6. Inspect fuses and relays related to the fuel pump and ECM circuits for blown fuses or faults

Repair steps

  1. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes with a scan tool and operate the machine to see if the P0003 code returns to determine if the fault is intermittent or persistent.

  2. Repair wiring and connectors

If visual inspection revealed damage, repair or replace the damaged wiring and connectors. Ensure all connections are clean and secure. This is often the most common and least expensive fix.

  3. Replace fuel filters

If fuel filters are clogged or have not been replaced recently, replace them to ensure proper fuel flow.

  4. Replace Fuel Volume Regulator

If diagnostic tests confirm the FVR has incorrect resistance or is faulty, replace it with a genuine OEM part.

  5. Test lift/fuel pump

If the preceding steps do not resolve the issue, test the performance of the lift pump or main fuel pump and replace if failing.

  6. Diagnose Control Module

If all other components and wiring are verified good, the ECM may be at fault. This requires professional diagnosis and potentially programming of a new module.
