P0004

JCB P0004 – ECU: High Signal Volume Control Circuit of the Fuel Volume Regulator

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage in the fuel volume regulator's control circuit that is higher than the expected value. The fuel volume regulator, also known as the Inlet Metering Valve (IMV) or Suction Control Valve, controls the amount of fuel supplied to the high-pressure fuel pump. A high signal typically indicates a short to a positive voltage source, an open circuit, or a blown fuse. The ECM interprets this out-of-range signal as a fault, logs the P0004 code, and typically illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Check Engine Light. When this fault is active, the ECU may force the engine into a reduced power 'limp mode' to prevent potential damage, resulting in a noticeable decrease in engine torque and performance.

Check the cause

  1. Retrieve all fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, noting any accompanying fuel rail pressure codes (P0087, P0088) or regulator circuit faults (P0001, P0002, P0003)

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector for the fuel volume regulator for chafed insulation, melted wires, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Inspect fuses related to the fuel system circuit, as a blown fuse can create an open circuit triggering this code

  4. Check for proper voltage and ground at the fuel volume regulator connector using a multimeter (a reading above 5V confirms a high circuit condition)

  5. Disconnect the regulator and measure internal resistance across its terminals, comparing against service manual specifications to check for internal failure

  6. Monitor live data with a scan tool to compare commanded fuel pressure versus actual fuel pressure

Repair steps

  1. Address wiring and connector issues

If visual inspection or voltage tests reveal damage, repair or replace the affected wiring harness sections. Ensure all connections are clean, secure, and free of corrosion.

  2. Replace blown fuses

If a blown fuse is found in the fuel system circuit, replace it with a new fuse of the correct rating.

  3. Replace fuel volume regulator

If the regulator fails the internal resistance test, depressurize the fuel system and remove the old regulator. Install the new regulator, ensuring O-rings and seals are correctly fitted and lubricated, and torque retaining bolts to manufacturer specifications.

  4. Clear fault codes and verify repair

Clear all fault codes from the ECU. Start the engine, perform a drive cycle, and re-scan to confirm the P0004 code does not return.

  5. Diagnose ECU (Rare)

If all wiring, fuses, and the regulator test correctly, the issue may lie with the ECU's output driver, requiring advanced diagnostics or ECU replacement.
