JCB P0016 – ECM: Crankshaft and Camshaft Position Relationship Fault
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a misalignment between the rotational position of the engine's crankshaft and the intake camshaft for Bank 1. This indicates that the signals from the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor do not align as expected. A discrepancy beyond a specified threshold will trigger this fault, illuminate the check engine light, and potentially enable limp mode to prevent engine damage.

Check the cause
Verify the fault code using an OBD-II scanner and note any accompanying sensor circuit codes that could narrow down the cause.
Check engine oil level and condition (dirty or low oil can affect VVT systems and phasers, leading to timing correlation errors).
Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for both the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. On JCB 444 engines, also check injector wiring plugs for loose connections.
Test the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors using a multimeter (for resistance/voltage) or an oscilloscope (for signal patterns) to verify they are operating within manufacturer specifications.
Verify mechanical timing (if sensor/wiring checks pass) by setting the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC), removing the timing cover, and inspecting timing marks, chain slack, tensioner, and guides.
Repair steps
Address oil issues
If engine oil is low or contaminated (causing VVT/phaser issues), perform an oil and filter change. Clear codes and retest.
Repair wiring
Repair or replace any damaged wiring or corroded connectors in the sensor circuits. Ensure all connections are secure.
Replace faulty sensors
If a sensor tests faulty, disconnect the battery and the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt, and pull the old sensor out. Install the new sensor, ensuring O-rings are correctly seated, tighten the retaining bolt, and reconnect the electrical connector and battery.
Correct mechanical timing
If timing is incorrect, align the engine to TDC, remove the old timing chain, tensioner, and guides. Install new components, ensuring timing marks on the sprockets are perfectly aligned per the service manual. Reassemble all components, including the timing cover.
Clear codes and test
Use a diagnostic scanner to clear the P0016 fault code. Start the engine, let it warm up, and test drive the machine to confirm the repair was successful and the code does not reappear.
