P0016

JCB P0016 – ECU: Camshaft Position Correlation

Issue description

The engine control module (ECU) has detected a phase shift or synchronization issue between the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). This indicates a potential misalignment or malfunction in the timing relationship between the camshaft and the crankshaft. Because of this discrepancy, the ECU cannot accurately control fuel injection and ignition timing, which can lead to poor engine performance and potential internal damage.

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • 4CX
  • JS130
  • JS160
  • JS200
  • telehandlers

Check the cause

  1. Verify the P0016 code and check for any other related trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner

  2. Check engine oil level and condition (low or poor-quality oil can affect the variable valve timing system)

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors for the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors for signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  4. Test the voltage and resistance of the camshaft and crankshaft sensors using a multimeter to ensure they are within manufacturer specifications

  5. Visually inspect the mechanical timing components (timing chain or belt) for proper alignment of timing marks, stretching, or damage, and check the timing chain tensioner

  6. Inspect the reluctor rings (tone rings) on both the camshaft and crankshaft for any damage or wear

Repair steps

  1. Address oil issues

If the engine oil is low or dirty (which can trigger VVT-related timing faults), perform an oil and filter change.

  2. Repair wiring

If any wiring is found to be damaged or corroded, repair or replace the affected sections. Ensure all sensor connectors are secure.

  3. Replace faulty sensors

If either the camshaft or crankshaft position sensor tests out of specification, replace it. Remove the retaining bolt, disconnect the electrical connector, and install the new sensor.

  4. Correct mechanical timing

If the timing chain or belt has slipped or is stretched, realign or replace it. A damaged tensioner must also be replaced.

  5. Replace reluctor rings

If the reluctor rings are damaged or worn, repair or replace them to restore proper sensor signal generation.

  6. Clear codes and test

After any repairs are made, clear the fault code using an OBD-II scanner and perform a drive cycle to see if the code returns.

  7. Address ECU issues

In rare cases where all mechanical and sensor checks pass, the Engine Control Module itself may be faulty and require reprogramming or replacement by a qualified technician.
