P0045

JCB P0045 – ECM: Turbo EVRV Fault

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit in the turbocharger boost control solenoid, also known as the Electronic Vacuum Regulating Valve (EVRV). This solenoid manages the vacuum or pressure supplied to the turbocharger's wastegate or variable geometry turbo (VGT/VNT) to regulate boost pressure. An open circuit indicates a complete break in the electrical path, preventing the ECM from communicating with or controlling the solenoid. This condition leads to incorrect boost pressure, resulting in reduced engine performance, poor acceleration, and the activation of limp mode.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the presence of code P0045 with a scan tool, clear the codes, and operate the machine to see if the fault returns.

  2. Visually inspect the boost control solenoid (EVRV) and its wiring harness for frayed wires, cracked insulation, or corrosion.

  3. Check for loose or disconnected electrical connectors at the solenoid and ensure they are fully seated.

  4. Inspect all related vacuum hoses for cracks, leaks, or loose connections.

  5. Measure the solenoid's internal resistance with a multimeter (ignition off) and compare to manufacturer specifications; an infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit.

  6. Check for proper voltage supply and a good ground at the solenoid's electrical connector with the ignition turned on.

  7. Perform a solenoid actuation test using a scan tool's bidirectional controls or by applying a direct 9V/12V power source to listen for a mechanical click.

  8. Conduct a vacuum/pressure test using a vacuum pump to verify the solenoid can mechanically hold and release vacuum when energized and de-energized.

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and hoses

Address immediate issues found during visual inspection. Repair or replace any damaged wiring, corroded connectors, or cracked vacuum hoses. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  2. Replace boost control solenoid

If the EVRV fails the resistance test (shows an open circuit), fails to actuate, or cannot hold vacuum, replace the faulty solenoid/actuator.

  3. Inspect turbocharger actuator linkage

Check the mechanical turbocharger actuator that the solenoid controls. Ensure the linkage moves freely and is not seized.

  4. Test and verify ECM

If the solenoid and wiring are fully functional, use a diagnostic tool to verify the ECM is commanding the solenoid correctly. ECM failure is rare but should be considered if all other components are ruled out.

  5. Final verification

Clear the fault codes with a scan tool and perform a road test or operate the machine under load to ensure the P0045 code does not reappear and engine performance is restored.
