JCB P0183 – Engine ECU: High Signal Circuit 'A' Fuel Temperature Sensor
Issue description
The Engine ECU has detected a voltage signal from the 'A' fuel temperature sensor circuit that is higher than the expected operational range. This high input condition typically indicates that the sensor is reporting an abnormally low fuel temperature, or that there is an open or short circuit in the wiring. Because the fuel temperature sensor allows the ECM to adjust fuel injection timing and pressure for optimal combustion, this fault can cause the system to enter a fail-safe mode, potentially leading to reduced engine power and decreased efficiency.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the fuel temperature sensor's wiring harness and connector for any signs of damage, corrosion, chafing, loose connections, or fuel contamination (which can cause short circuits)
Use a diagnostic scanner to confirm that P0183 is the active fault and check for any other related codes
With the sensor disconnected and the ignition on, use a multimeter to check for the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and a good ground at the connector
Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance across its terminals using a multimeter. Compare this reading to the manufacturer's specifications (a significantly lower resistance indicates a failed sensor)
If the sensor tests within specifications, check for continuity and for shorts to power in the wiring harness between the sensor connector and the Engine ECU
Repair steps
Make the machine safe
Stop the engine and allow it to cool completely. Disconnect the machine's battery before starting work.
Locate and remove the sensor
The fuel temperature sensor is often located on the high-pressure fuel pump or on the common rail. On some newer engines, it may be in a different location. Carefully disconnect the electrical connector. Using the appropriate wrench, unscrew and remove the old sensor. Be prepared for minor fuel spillage.
Install the new sensor
If required, apply a small amount of thread sealant to the new sensor's threads. Install the new sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect and clear codes
Securely attach the electrical connector to the new sensor. Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the P0183 fault code from the Engine ECU's memory.
Verify the repair
Start the engine and let it run to confirm that the check engine light does not reappear and the fault code does not return. Monitor the live data from the fuel temperature sensor with a scanner to ensure it is providing a plausible reading that changes with engine temperature.
