P0190

JCB P0190 – ECM: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit A Fault

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormal or inconsistent rate of change in the voltage signal from the fuel rail pressure sensor. This is a signal plausibility failure, meaning the signal is behaving erratically compared to expected values based on engine speed and load, even if it remains within the normal voltage range. This fault indicates an abnormal reading that may affect the proper operation of the engine's fuel system, often forcing the machine into a 'Torque Reduction_Limp Home (Idle Only)' mode to protect the engine.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other related OBD-II fault codes that could point to a related issue

  2. Check fuel level to ensure the fuel pump is not struggling and causing erratic pressure readings

  3. Consult Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for known issues related to this code on your specific machine

  4. Visually inspect the sensor wiring harness for fraying, melting, corrosion, rodent damage, or rubbing damage from vibrations

  5. Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and inspect pins and terminals for corrosion (often seen as a green deposit), moisture, or bent/pushed-out/loose connections

  6. Verify a 5-volt reference supply and good ground at the sensor connector with the ignition on (engine off); absence of voltage could indicate a blown fuse or a break in the wiring

  7. With the ignition off, test continuity of the wiring between the sensor connector and the ECM connector (resistance greater than 0.5 ohms indicates a problem)

  8. Test the sensor's signal wire voltage and compare to manufacturer specifications (e.g., Bosch: 0.5V stationary, 1.32V at idle, up to 3.77V on acceleration; JCB specific: 4.0-5.5V with ignition on)

  9. Measure actual fuel rail pressure with a mechanical gauge (typically 27,000-30,000 kPa / 3900-4350 PSI at idle) and compare to scan tool data

  10. Inspect the fuel system for leaks in the lines or blockages such as a clogged fuel filter or tank strainer

Repair steps

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure

Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Relieve the pressure in the common rail system before disconnecting any fuel lines, as high-pressure fuel can cause serious injury. Isolate the machine's electrical system.

  2. Access the sensor

Locate the fuel rail pressure sensor, which is mounted on the common fuel rail.

  3. Perform diagnostics

Follow the diagnostic checks listed above to confirm whether the fault lies with the sensor itself, the wiring, or the ECM.

  4. Repair wiring and connectors

If damaged wiring or corroded connectors were found during diagnostics, repair or replace them using automotive-grade materials. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  5. Replace fuel rail pressure sensor

If the sensor is determined to be faulty, it should be replaced. Some JCB service information suggests that if the fuel pressure sensor is defective, the entire common rail assembly should be replaced, as the sensor should not be removed from the rail. However, aftermarket sensors are widely available. Unscrew the old sensor from the fuel rail, clean the mounting surface, install the new sensor, and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque to avoid damage. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  6. Perform final system checks

Reconnect the battery and clear the fault code using a scan tool. Start the engine, check for any fuel leaks, and monitor the live data from the fuel rail pressure sensor to ensure it is reading correctly.
