P0278

JCB P0278 – ECM: Contribution / Balancing of the 6th Cylinder

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an imbalance in the power contribution of the sixth cylinder compared to the other cylinders. This indicates that cylinder number six is producing too much or too little power, which can lead to rough engine operation, reduced performance, and increased fuel consumption. The fault is typically triggered by issues with fuel delivery, a faulty fuel injector, or a malfunction in the electrical circuit controlling the injector.

Applies to these machines

  • 6-cylinder engine models
  • larger excavators
  • loaders
  • Ecomax Tier 4 engines

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector associated with the number six fuel injector for any signs of damage, corrosion, fraying, or loose connections

  2. Check for other related fault codes using a diagnostic scanner to provide more context to the issue

  3. Measure the resistance of the number six fuel injector using a multimeter and compare it to the manufacturer's specifications and the readings from the other injectors

  4. Verify that the fuel injector for cylinder six is receiving a proper pulse signal from the ECM using a noid light or an oscilloscope with the engine running

  5. Swap the fuel injector from cylinder six with an injector from another cylinder to see if the fault code moves (e.g., to P0277), which confirms the injector itself is faulty

  6. Ensure that the fuel pressure is within the specified range and that the fuel is clean and not contaminated

  7. Perform a compression test on cylinder six to rule out any mechanical engine issues, such as problems with pistons, rings, or valves

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and connectors

If any damage, corrosion, or loose connections are found in the wiring harness or connector for the sixth fuel injector, repair or replace the affected components. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  2. Replace the fuel injector

If the fuel injector is identified as the faulty component (e.g., via the swap test), replace it. It is recommended to replace all fuel injectors as a set to ensure balanced engine performance.

  3. Address fuel system issues

If a fuel delivery problem is detected, address the root cause by replacing the fuel filter, cleaning the fuel lines, or repairing/replacing the fuel pump.

  4. Resolve mechanical engine problems

If a mechanical issue like low compression is found during testing, perform the necessary internal engine repairs.

  5. Clear fault codes and test

After completing the repairs, use a diagnostic tool to clear the P0278 fault code from the ECM's memory. Start the engine and operate the machine under load to confirm the repair.
