P0340

JCB P0340 – ECM: Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Fault

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a problem with the signal from the camshaft position sensor on Circuit 'A'. This sensor monitors the rotational position and speed of the camshaft, which the ECM uses to precisely control fuel injection and ignition timing. A malfunction in this circuit indicates an issue with the sensor's operation, its wiring, or its connectors, preventing the ECM from accurately determining the camshaft's position and leading to engine performance issues.

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • 4CX
  • JS130
  • JS160
  • JS200
  • JS210
  • JS220
  • JS230
  • JCB Telehandlers
  • TM220

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the camshaft position sensor (typically a three-pin sensor on the cylinder head or timing cover) and its electrical connector for corrosion, moisture, dirt, or bent pins.

  2. Examine the wiring harness leading to the sensor for chafing, cracked insulation, or heat damage from nearby engine components.

  3. Check for reference voltage: With the sensor connected and ignition ON (engine off), back-probe the sensor connector to verify a 5V reference signal from the ECM. If absent, suspect wiring or ECM issues.

  4. Check for ground: With ignition ON, verify the ground wire at the connector reads close to 0 volts when tested against the negative battery terminal.

  5. Check the signal wire: Back-probe the signal wire while a helper cranks the engine. The voltage should fluctuate between near 0V and 5V. If the signal is absent or static, the sensor is likely faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

For safety, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery before starting work.

  2. Disconnect the sensor

Locate the camshaft position sensor on the engine and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab.

  3. Remove the old sensor

Remove the single mounting bolt holding the sensor in place. Gently twist and pull the sensor to remove it from its housing, noting any O-rings or seals that come out with it.

  4. Install the new sensor

Lightly lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean engine oil. Carefully insert the new sensor into its mounting location until properly seated, then install and tighten the mounting bolt (do not overtighten).

  5. Reconnect and finalize

Securely attach the electrical connector to the new sensor and reconnect the negative battery terminal. Clear the P0340 fault code using an OBD-II scanner, then start the engine and perform a test drive to confirm the issue is resolved.
