P2228

JCB P2228 – ECU: Atmospheric Pressure Sensor Low Fault

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the atmospheric (barometric) pressure sensor that is below the expected operational range. This indicates a potential short to ground, a faulty sensor, or an internal ECU issue. The sensor measures ambient air pressure to help the ECU calculate the correct air-fuel mixture and manage boost pressure. A low signal typically triggers an automatic torque reduction to protect the engine and can result in reduced power, decreased fuel efficiency, rough idling, or difficulty starting.

Applies to these machines

  • 3CX
  • 3DX
  • EcoMAX engine equipped machines

Check the cause

  1. Record and clear the code, then operate the machine to see if the fault returns immediately.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the atmospheric pressure sensor for frayed wires, green corrosion, loose pins, or melted insulation.

  3. Check the sensor's power supply and ground connections using a multimeter to ensure it receives the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground.

  4. Verify overall battery health and check for loose ground straps, which can cause electronic faults.

  5. Use a diagnostic tool with the ignition on (engine off) to compare the sensor's live data reading against the actual atmospheric pressure for your location and altitude.

  6. Test the voltage on the sensor's signal wire with a multimeter; a reading below 0.5V confirms a low circuit fault.

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and connectors

If visual inspection reveals damage, repair or replace the affected wiring harness sections. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  2. Replace the pressure sensor

If the wiring is intact and voltage/data checks confirm the sensor is faulty, replace the sensor. It is typically located on the intake manifold or near the air filter housing.

  3. Address ECU-integrated sensors

If the machine model has the barometric pressure sensor integrated directly into the Engine ECU, the sensor cannot be replaced separately. The ECU must be repaired or replaced by a qualified technician.

  4. Final verification

After repairs, clear all fault codes and run the machine under normal operating conditions to ensure the fault does not reappear.
