P2265

JCB P2265 – ECM or PCM: Water in Fuel Sensor Feedback Signal 1 Plausibility Fault

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a plausibility fault in the feedback signal from the water-in-fuel sensor, meaning the signal received does not match expected behavior and is outside normal performance parameters. This indicates a potential fault in the sensor itself, damaged wiring, or a significant amount of water contaminating the fuel. When this fault is active, the system may initiate a torque reduction, lowering engine power to protect the engine and fuel system from damage.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault code using a diagnostic scanner and check for related codes (e.g., P2264, P2266, P2267)

  2. Inspect fuel quality (contamination cause): Drain the fuel/water separator filter and check for visible water or a milky appearance in the fuel

  3. Take a fuel sample from the tank in a clear container and allow it to settle to see if water separates and sinks to the bottom

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the water-in-fuel sensor for chafing, breaks, or heat damage

  5. Check the sensor's electrical connector and the corresponding ECM connector for corrosion, bent or broken pins, or loose connections

  6. Test for power and ground (wiring/electrical cause): With the ignition on and engine off, disconnect the sensor and measure for a 5-volt reference between the power and ground terminals on the harness side

  7. Test sensor output signal: With the sensor connected and ignition on, measure the output voltage on the signal wire (typically should be 0.5V to 4.5V)

  8. Check circuit continuity: With the ignition off, test for continuity on the ground wire and check for short circuits between the signal, power, and ground wires

Repair steps

  1. Address fuel contamination

If significant water is found in the fuel during inspection, drain the fuel tank, replace the fuel filters, and refill with fresh, clean diesel.

  2. Repair wiring or connectors

If diagnostic checks reveal damage to the wiring harness or connectors, repair or replace the faulty section. Ensure all connections are clean, secure, and properly sealed.

  3. Replace the water-in-fuel sensor

If the fuel is clean and wiring is intact, the sensor is the likely culprit. Unscrew the old sensor from the bottom of the fuel filter housing, have the new sensor ready to install quickly to minimize fuel spillage, install the new sensor with its sealing ring correctly in place, tighten to manufacturer specifications, and reconnect the electrical connector.

  4. Clear fault codes and verify repair

Use a diagnostic scanner to clear the P2265 fault code from the ECM's memory. Start the engine, perform a test drive if possible, and re-scan to ensure the code does not return.
