P2265

JCB P2265 – ECU: Range / Performance of the fuel water sensor circuit

Issue description

The engine control unit (ECU) has detected that the water-in-fuel sensor circuit signal is operating outside of its expected range or performance parameters. This indicates either that water has been detected in the fuel system, or that there is a fault with the sensor or its associated circuitry. This condition can result in reduced engine power or torque to prevent potential engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel by draining a sample from the fuel/water separator into a clear container to check for a distinct water layer or milky substance (most common cause)

  2. Check the fuel filter to see if it is clogged or overdue for replacement

  3. Visually inspect the water-in-fuel sensor wiring harness and connectors (typically located in the fuel filter housing) for frayed wires, broken wires, loose connections, or corrosion

  4. Perform electrical tests on the sensor circuit, including checking for a typical output voltage of 0.5V to 4.5V (with ignition on, engine off) and measuring sensor resistance against manufacturer specifications

Repair steps

  1. Drain fuel/water separator

If water is found in the fuel sample, drain the fuel/water separator until only clean diesel fuel is present.

  2. Address contaminated fuel

If the fuel tank is heavily contaminated with water, drain and clean the tank. For minor contamination, use a fuel additive designed to remove water.

  3. Replace fuel filter

If the fuel filter is old or clogged, replace it with a new one.

  4. Repair wiring and connectors

If damage or corrosion was found during the visual inspection, repair or replace the affected sections of the wiring harness or the connector itself.

  5. Replace water-in-fuel sensor

If electrical diagnostic checks point to an internal fault in the sensor, replace it with a compatible OEM or high-quality aftermarket part.

  6. Clear fault codes

After completing the repairs, use a diagnostic tool to clear the P2265 fault code from the ECU.

  7. Test the machine

Start the engine and operate the machine to ensure that the fault code does not reappear.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Common sensor, sometimes sold as a kit with a primer. Widely used across backhoe loaders, telehandlers, forklifts, and excavators.

  • Water-in-fuel sensor

    701/80591

Verify application carefully; some sources list this part number as an oil pressure switch.

  • Complete fuel filter assembly that includes the water-in-fuel sensor.
