P256D

JCB P256D – Engine ECU: Engine Idle Speed Selector Sensor/Switch Circuit High

Issue description

The machine's control unit has detected an abnormal, out-of-range, or high voltage signal from either the automatic high idle sensor (pressure switch) or the transmission's gear selector speed sensor. This indicates a problem with the sensor's operation or its electrical circuit connection to the system, which can disrupt engine speed control, auto-idle functions, or transmission speed reporting.

Applies to these machines

  • Machines with EcoMAX Tier 4 engine
  • 3CX
  • 4CX
  • Tracked Excavators
  • Wheeled Excavators

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness associated with the engine speed controller for rubbing, fraying, or heat damage

  2. Disconnect the engine speed controller connector and inspect for debris, water ingress, corrosion (green or white powder), and loose or bent pins

  3. Check for damaged or loose machine earth (ground) connections

Repair steps

  1. Perform visual and electrical inspection

Carry out the harness, connector, and ground checks. Rectify any damaged wiring or corroded connectors found.

  2. Clear fault code

Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the fault code. Check if the fault returns to rule out a temporary issue.

  3. Test engine speed controller

If the fault persists, consult an official JCB service manual to perform specific multimeter tests for voltage and resistance on the engine speed controller.

  4. Replace component

If the engine speed controller fails the specific testing procedure, replace the sensor/switch.
