JCB U040B – Engine ECU: Invalid Data From EGR Control Module
Issue description
The Engine ECU has received invalid data from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) control module over the CAN network. This indicates a communication breakdown or an internal fault within the EGR actuator itself. When this fault is logged, the system triggers a Reduced Power Mode, deliberately limiting engine torque to prevent potential damage and resulting in reduced engine performance.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- JCB 444 T4i EcoMax
- JCB 444 T4 Final EcoMax
- JCB JS130 Tracked Excavator
- JCB 3CX Backhoe Loader
- JCB 4CX Backhoe Loader
- JCB Loadall 531-70 Telehandler
- JCB Loadall 541-70 Telehandler
- JCB JS205 Excavator
- JCB JS220 Excavator
Check the cause
Stop the engine and allow it to cool before starting any work.
Check for other active fault codes (e.g., P0400 EGR Flow or U040D VGT Turbo). If P0400 is present, perform specific CANBUS tests related to that code first.
Check battery voltage to ensure it is at least 12.4V, as U-series codes are highly sensitive to voltage fluctuations.
Inspect the wiring harness for damage, fraying, rubbing, or melting, paying close attention to the multi-plug on top of the engine.
Unplug and inspect the EGR actuator connector and related engine harness plugs for corrosion ('green death'), bent/loose pins, water, or debris.
Verify there is a 12V power supply and a good ground at the EGR actuator plug.
Check the CAN Bus resistance between the CAN high and CAN low wires at the actuator plug (should be approximately 60 ohms).
Remove the EGR valve and inspect it and the EGR cooler for carbon blockages or seized linkages.
Connect a diagnostic tool like JCB Service Master to run EGR valve tests and attempt to perform a calibration (learn) procedure to see if the valve is functioning correctly.
Repair steps
Repair electrical connections
Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness. Clean or replace corroded connectors and ensure all pins are secure and free of moisture.
Clean EGR components
If the EGR valve or cooler is found to be blocked with carbon, clean them thoroughly. Ensure the valve mechanism moves freely without binding.
Attempt recalibration
Connect JCB Service Master software, clear the fault codes, and attempt the EGR valve calibration (learn) procedure to see if the valve functions correctly.
Replace EGR valve and actuator
If the fault persists, the calibration fails, or an internal hardware error (U040B-96) is logged, replace the EGR valve and actuator assembly.
Perform post-replacement calibration
After installing a new EGR actuator, a 'learn' or calibration procedure must be successfully completed using the JCB Service Master diagnostic software for the system to function correctly.
