John Deere 105.15 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Intake Manifold Air Temperature High - Least Severe

Issue description

The sensor located in the air intake horn or intake manifold has detected that the charge air is running hotter than the maximum specified normal operating temperature.

Check the cause

  1. Check the air cleaner and ensure the exterior fins of the radiator and charge air cooler are completely clean and free of debris, dust, or agricultural chaff.

  2. Verify the engine coolant level. Low coolant will prevent the charge air cooler from properly cooling the intake air.

  3. Check the Low-Temperature Cooling (LTC) circuit for air locks, which can cause low flow through the circuit to the charge air cooler.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the Intake Manifold Air Temperature Sensor for loose pins, corrosion, or shorts.

  5. Using John Deere Service Advisor, monitor the Manifold Air Temperature data point and compare it to ambient air and EGR temperature sensors to see if the sensor is reading erratically.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the coolers

    Thoroughly blow out or wash the radiator and charge air cooler to restore proper airflow.

  2. Bleed the cooling system

    If the machine utilizes a Low-Temperature Cooling (LTC) circuit, bleed the system to remove air locks. Fill the coolant reservoir to the "MAX" line. Open the bleed valve while running the engine without a load for 5 minutes at 1700 RPM. Shut the engine off for 5 to 10 minutes, close the drain valve, and recheck the coolant level. Repeat until the coolant stays at the "MAX" line.

  3. Flow test the LTC circuit

    If the code returns after bleeding, flow-test the low-temperature circuit using a flow tester (e.g., KJD10431) to ensure the coolant pump is functioning.

  4. Locate the sensor

    If the cooling system is functioning perfectly and Service Advisor indicates the sensor is out of specification, locate the Intake Manifold Air Temperature Sensor (mounted on the air intake horn/manifold).

  5. Replace the sensor

    Disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the old sensor, and install the new OEM sensor.

  6. Verify repair

    Clear the ECU fault codes and run the machine under a working load to verify the repair.
