John Deere 1136 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Control Unit Internal Temperature Extremely High

Triggered when the internal temperature sensor of the Engine Control Unit detects that its temperature has exceeded the maximum allowable limit, typically 135 °C (275 °F). The engine protection system will usually limit engine speed and power (derate) to prevent catastrophic failure.

   Check the physical area around the Engine ECU for adequate air flow, ensuring it is not packed with mud, crop debris, or dust.

   Check the engine cooling system (radiator, forced air cooler) for debris or contamination causing high ambient engine bay temperatures.

   Check if the DTC sets when the machine is completely cold (e.g., first thing in the morning) to verify if the internal temperature sensor has failed.

   Clear Debris

   Thoroughly clean the engine bay, specifically focusing on the mounting location of the ECU. Remove any dirt, leaves, or mud blocking airflow to the module's heat sink.

   Clean Cooling Package

   Blow out the radiator and charge air cooler fins with compressed air to reduce overall engine bay temperatures.

   Cycle Power

   Turn the ignition key off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on to see if the code clears after the module has cooled down.

   ECU Replacement

   If the code persists after ensuring adequate airflow, or if the code immediately returns on a cold engine, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure. The ECU must be replaced or sent to a specialized industrial electronics repair facility.

   Reprogramming

   If replacing the ECU, the new unit must be programmed by a John Deere dealer with the correct software payload, injector QR codes, and machine configuration data.
