John Deere 1180 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Calculated Turbocharger Turbine Inlet Temperature Extremely High

Issue description

The control module calculates or senses that the turbocharger turbine inlet temperature has exceeded the specified maximum safe limit. The system's automatic reaction is to initiate an Engine Protection Shutdown or limit engine power (derate) to prevent damage to the turbocharger and related engine components.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active ECU codes (such as Intake Air Temperature, Exhaust Manifold Pressure, and fueling rates) that could skew the ECU's temperature calculation

  2. Inspect the cooling system for debris or obstructions in the radiator and intercooler

  3. Verify coolant levels and ensure cooling fans are operating properly

  4. Check turbocharger operation to ensure it is not being overworked and has adequate airflow

  5. Examine physical exhaust temperature sensors and wiring harness (if equipped on your specific engine tier) for damage, high resistance, or malfunction

Repair steps

  1. Reduce Load

    Immediately reduce engine speed and load to prevent catastrophic damage to the turbocharger and engine components.

  2. Clear Debris

    Thoroughly clean the engine cooling packages (radiators, intercoolers) of any agricultural debris or dust.

  3. Address Sensor Faults

    If diagnostic checks revealed other active codes (e.g., Intake Air Temp or Exhaust Pressure), replace those faulty sensors to correct the ECU's temperature calculation.

  4. Replace Defective Cooling/Turbo Components

    If the cooling system is failing or the turbocharger is mechanically overworking/failing, replace the defective components.

  5. Reset and Monitor

    After addressing the root cause of the overheating, reset the ECU to clear the error code. Run the machine under normal load and monitor the turbine inlet temperature to ensure it remains within the specified safe range.
