Check the cause

  1. System Reboot: Restart the tractor (cycle the key switch) to see if the fault clears. Software initialization glitches can sometimes trigger this code temporarily.

  2. Check for Other Codes: Look for active CAN bus or voltage-related codes. If the CAN bus is experiencing high error rates or message overflows, it may be a wiring issue rather than a failed module.

  3. Software Version Check: Verify the current software payload on both the XMC and XSC modules, as a primary cause of this fault is a software version mismatch.

  4. Harness Inspection: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors at the Steering Control Unit for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the John Deere Service ADVISOR diagnostic tool to the machine.

  2. Read diagnostic trouble codes

Read all stored and active diagnostic trouble codes to confirm XMC 001231.12 is the primary fault.

  3. Check software versions

Check the software versions of the XMC and XSC modules.

  4. Update the Software

Flash/update the XMC control software to the latest version to ensure it matches and communicates properly with the XSC software.

  5. Clear codes and test

Clear the codes and reboot the machine. Test the AutoTrac™ system to see if the steering engages properly.

  6. Hardware Replacement

If the software update does not resolve the issue, the internal hardware of the Steering Control Unit has failed.

  7. Replace control unit

Replace the AutoTrac Steering Control Unit.

  8. Program and calibrate

Use Service ADVISOR to program, configure, and calibrate the new steering module to the tractor.
