John Deere 1231.14 – XMC: Control Software Internal Fault / Steering System Control Unit Fault
Issue description
High error rate on the CAN Bus (specifically the 1000 kBd Drive Train CAN Bus) or a direct data transfer/communication problem between the XMC control software and the XSC control software, which limits or completely disables AutoTrac™ automatic steering functions.

Check the cause
Restart the tractor to see if the code is an intermittent software glitch and check if other CAN Bus codes (like 002019.09 or 000639.08) are present.
Visually inspect the CAN BUS wiring harness and connectors between the XMC and XSC modules for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
Ensure the terminating resistors at both ends of the CAN BUS network are functioning correctly (typically reading 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected).
Identify and mitigate any aftermarket equipment or damaged wiring that could be causing electromagnetic interference on the CAN Bus.
Verify the software versions using Service ADVISOR™ to check for a software mismatch between the XMC and XSC modules.
Repair steps
Update Software
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR™ and flash both the XMC and XSC modules to the latest software versions to resolve communication mismatches.
Repair Wiring
If the software update fails or the modules cannot be reached, repair or replace any damaged sections of the CAN Bus wiring harness identified during the diagnostic checks.
Replace Terminating Resistors
If the CAN Bus resistance is out of spec, replace the faulty terminating resistor.
Replace the XMC Module
If the wiring is intact, terminating resistors are good, and the software is up to date but the code persists, the XMC Steering System Control Unit has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Calibrate
After replacing the XMC module, use Service ADVISOR™ to calibrate the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) and the Steering Control Valve.
