000126.15

John Deere 000126.15 – TCU, PTI, PTP, or BIF: Transmission Oil Filter Issue

Issue description

The transmission/hydraulic oil system is experiencing a restriction, most commonly due to a dirty oil filter or cold, thick hydraulic oil causing high back pressure. The '.15' suffix indicates a less severe condition. When oil is cold, a thermal bypass valve opens to ensure lubrication. If the code persists after the oil reaches normal operating temperature, it indicates a genuine blockage, a faulty restriction sensor, or a stuck bypass valve. Ignoring a persistent code risks severe damage to sensitive components, particularly in IVT/AutoPowr systems, due to unfiltered oil circulation.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor and allow the transmission/hydraulic oil to warm to normal operating temperature to rule out cold, viscous oil

  2. Verify the last service interval for the transmission oil and filter, and check the condition of the oil

  3. Inspect the old filter for excessive metal particles or other debris, which could indicate a more severe internal component failure

  4. Inspect the transmission filter restriction sensor (located just above the transmission filter) and wiring harness for loose connections or damage

  5. Inspect the filter bypass valve (thermal wax element or spring-and-plunger) to see if it is stuck open or closed

Repair steps

  1. Change oil filter

If the code persists after the oil is warm, replace the transmission oil filter and clean the transmission sump screen if applicable. Inspect the old filter for excessive metal particles or debris, which could indicate internal component failure.

  2. Replace restriction sensor

If a new filter does not resolve the issue, inspect the sensor wiring and connector. Replace the filter restriction sensor, as it is a known failure point that can send incorrect restriction signals.

  3. Service bypass valve

On IVT/AutoPowr transmissions, replace the thermal wax cartridge element in the filter housing. Accessing this part can be difficult and may require removing a cab mount to get to the port in the filter housing. On other models, remove the mechanical plunger and spring assembly, clean off debris, and ensure the plunger moves freely and the spring is intact.

  4. Consult dealer

If the fault persists after replacing the filter, sensor, and servicing the bypass valve, contact a dealer for professional diagnosis of the hydraulic system or control unit using specialized tools.
