John Deere 1321.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU has Detected that the Starter has been Engaged Too Long

This code triggers when the engine starter is engaged for an extended period (typically over 30 seconds), or if the ECU detects low resistance/a short on the starter solenoid lockout relay drive circuit.

   Verify if the engine was actually cranked continuously for 30 seconds or more (operator error). If yes, the starter protection system is functioning correctly and no repair is needed.

   Inspect the Engine Interface Harness for a short to power on the E04 WHT (White) wire located between the starter relay and the Engine Control Unit.

   Turn off machine and disconnect battery

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety.

   Locate Engine Interface Harness

   Locate the Engine Interface Harness (often designated as W18 in John Deere schematics).

   Trace E04 WHT wire

   Trace the E04 WHT wire from the starter relay to the ECU.

   Test wire for short or low resistance

   Use a multimeter to test the wire for a short to power or low resistance.

   Repair or replace harness

   If a short or damaged wire is found, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the Engine Interface Harness entirely.

   Test starter relay

   If the wiring is intact, test the starter relay to ensure the internal contacts are not sticking closed, which would cause the starter to remain engaged. Replace the relay if it fails testing.

   Clear codes and test-start

   Clear the fault codes and test-start the machine to verify the code does not return.
