John Deere 1322.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Misfires Detected

The control module detects a misfire in one or more cylinders. When this code is active, the engine control software typically limits engine power (derate) to protect the engine, and continued operation without repair can result in a complete loss of machine availability.

   Check for accompanying fuel pressure codes (e.g., 001347.xx series for Suction Control Valve or Fuel Rail Pressure issues) which can cause erratic pressure and misfires

   Verify fuel quality and supply, ensuring diesel is free of water, dirt, or oil contamination that could cause lacquering or seizure of internal injector components

   Check for air intrusion in the low-pressure fuel supply lines and bleed the fuel system to ensure no air bubbles reach the injection pump

   Visually inspect the fuel injector wiring harnesses and connectors for chafing, shorts, or loose connections

   Perform a cylinder cutout test using a diagnostic scan tool (like Service ADVISOR) to isolate exactly which cylinder is misfiring

   Perform a mechanical compression test if the fuel system and injectors test fine, to rule out worn cylinder bores, pitted valves, or broken piston rings

   Preparation

   Ensure the engine is off, the key is removed, and the engine has cooled. Clean the area around the fuel rail and injectors thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the engine.

   Relieve Pressure

   Crack the fuel lines carefully to relieve residual pressure in the fuel system.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty fuel injector.

   Remove Fuel Lines

   Remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common fuel rail to the injector. Note: OEM guidelines often recommend replacing high-pressure fuel lines once they have been removed, as the seating surfaces deform.

   Remove Injector

   Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the fuel injector from the cylinder head.

   Clean the Bore

   Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and no carbon buildup remains.

   Install New Injector

   Install the new fuel injector equipped with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to exact OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec. Reconnect the electrical connector.

   Prime the System

   Prime the fuel system using the manual priming pump or by cycling the key to activate the electronic lift pump until resistance is felt/air is purged.

    Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic scanner, clear the 001322.31 fault code, start the engine, and check for leaks and smooth operation.
