John Deere 1351.05 – ECU: Compressor Clutch for Trailer Air Brakes, Current Too Low

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical current in the trailer air brake compressor clutch circuit is too low, which indicates an open circuit. The system will limit or completely disable the function of the trailer air brakes to prevent erratic operation.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors leading to the air brake compressor clutch for disconnected plugs, broken/frayed wires, or severely corroded terminals.

  2. Use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the compressor clutch circuit. Infinite resistance (or zero current draw when commanded on) confirms an open circuit.

  3. Disconnect the clutch connector and test the clutch coil directly. If the coil itself shows an open circuit (infinite ohms), the clutch has failed internally.

  4. Verify that the ECU is sending the correct voltage to the clutch connector when the system commands the compressor to engage.

Repair steps

  1. Power down

    Turn the ignition to the OFF position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector in the harness, repair or replace the faulty wiring/terminals. Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.

  3. Replace clutch or compressor

    If the wiring is intact but the clutch coil itself tested open, replace the compressor clutch. Note: On many heavy-duty John Deere air brake setups, the clutch is integrated into the compressor assembly, requiring replacement of the entire compressor unit.

  4. Reassemble and reconnect

    Securely reconnect the electrical harness to the compressor clutch.

  5. Clear codes and verify

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and use a diagnostic tool to reset the ECU and clear the 001351.05 fault code. Test the trailer air brake system to confirm the compressor engages and builds pressure without triggering further codes.
