1351.06

John Deere 1351.06 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Air Brake Compressor Clutch Short To Ground / Compressor Clutch for Trailer Air Brakes, Current Too High

Issue description

The circuit current for the trailer air brake compressor clutch is too high, which indicates a short circuit to ground. The control software will react by limiting or completely disabling the function of the trailer air brakes to prevent electrical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading from the ECU to the air brake compressor clutch for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the tractor chassis.

  2. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance and current in the compressor clutch circuit to confirm high current readings or continuity to ground on the power supply side.

  3. Disconnect the compressor clutch connector to isolate the component. If the short to ground disappears on the harness side, the internal coil of the compressor clutch is shorted. If the short remains, the wiring harness is at fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn the tractor off and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed or damaged wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace the Clutch

If the short is internal to the compressor clutch coil, remove the drive belt, unbolt the faulty air brake compressor clutch assembly, and install the replacement unit.

  4. Reassemble and Reconnect

Reinstall the drive belt (ensure proper tension) and plug the electrical connector back into the clutch. Reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ECU 001351.06 fault code. Start the engine and engage the trailer air brakes to verify that the compressor clutch engages properly without throwing a high-current code.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Trailer Air Brake Compressor Clutch / Air Brake Compressor Assembly

Verify whether your specific 5E or 5M series tractor is equipped with the factory IT4/Stage IIIB pneumatic trailer brake option, as the clutch is often sold as an assembly with the compressor depending on the OEM supplier.
