John Deere 1504.09 – PTF, SSU, SST, or OIC: Operator Presence Message Missing

The control software cannot determine if the operator is present in the seat. The Operator Interface Control (OIC) software fails to provide the CAN bus with the operator presence data, resulting in a missing signal. When this happens, a replacement value is transmitted, triggering this diagnostic trouble code. This condition will often disable automated functions like AutoTrac and may limit overall machine functionality.

   Software Check: Check if the OIC (Operator Interface Control) software is up to date, as software glitches can cause the message to drop.

   Reset the System

   Sit in the seat and cycle the key to restart the tractor. Observe if the 001504.09 code returns.

   Access the Seat Switch

   If the code returns, power down the machine and locate the operator presence switch (typically located within or directly under the seat cushion).

   Disconnect the switch and test it for continuity. It should close the circuit when weight is applied to the seat. If it fails this test, replace the operator presence switch.

   If the switch is functional, trace the wiring harness from the seat switch to the OIC/PTF module. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or corroded connector pins. Repair or replace any defective wiring components.

   Clear the diagnostic trouble codes and test operate the machine (and AutoTrac system) to ensure the PTF/SSU is successfully receiving the CAN bus message. If the issue persists after these steps, OEM manuals recommend having a John Deere dealer perform advanced CAN bus repairs.
