John Deere 1504.1 – PTR (Power Train Reverser): Seat Switch Closed Too Long

The control unit detects that the operator presence seat switch has remained in a closed (activated) state continuously for an excessive amount of time (surpassing a designated limit, typically 25.5 hours), indicating the switch is physically stuck, the wiring has shorted, or an operator has intentionally bypassed the safety switch.

   Visually inspect the seat switch connector under the seat for a jumper wire or paperclip used to intentionally bypass the safety switch.

   Inspect the seat switch mechanism to ensure it is not physically stuck, jammed with debris, or damaged. It should click or move freely when weight is applied and removed.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the seat switch for pinched wires, rubbed insulation causing a short to ground or power, or corroded connectors.

   Disconnect the seat switch and use a multimeter to test for continuity. The circuit should be open when the seat is empty and closed when occupied. If it reads closed while empty, the switch has failed internally.

   Turn off the tractor

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground cable for safety.

   Remove any bypasses

   If a jumper wire is found in the harness connector, remove it. Reconnect the harness to the seat switch.

   Replace a faulty switch

   If the switch failed the multimeter continuity test, remove the mounting hardware (some are twist-mount, others use screws) securing the switch to the seat base. Install the new switch and plug in the wiring harness.

   Repair wiring

   If the switch is fine but the harness is damaged, cut out the shorted section of wiring, solder in replacement wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the stored PTR codes. Sit in the seat, start the tractor, and verify that the Power Train Reverser engages properly. Stand up (safely, in neutral) to ensure the system recognizes the operator has left the seat.
