John Deere 1504.14 – XSC / SSU / BCU: Operator Not Seated While AutoTrac Active

Issue description

The system has detected that no operator has been on the seat for more than 7 seconds while the AutoTrac (auto-steer) function is activated. This causes the control software to limit functionality and deactivate the AutoTrac guidance system.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the operator is seated correctly with full weight on the seat cushion and that the presence switch is engaged when attempting to operate AutoTrac.

  2. Inspect the operator presence switch (located under or inside the seat cushion) for any physical signs of damage, wear, or debris preventing it from closing.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading from the seat switch to the main cab harness for pinches, breaks, or loose connections.

  4. Check for and install any available updates for the control software, as bugs or signal processing issues related to the operator presence switch can sometimes trigger false codes.

Repair steps

  1. Reset the System

Sit firmly in the operator's seat and restart the vehicle. Attempt to engage AutoTrac. If the code does not return, it was likely a temporary loss of seat contact.

  2. Test the Switch

If the code returns immediately, power down the machine. Locate the operator presence switch harness under the seat. Using a multimeter, test the switch for continuity. It is typically a normally open (N.O.) switch that should close (show continuity) when weight is applied to the seat.

  3. Replace the Switch

If the switch fails the continuity test, remove the seat cushion or switch mounting plate and replace the faulty operator presence switch.

  4. Reassemble and Calibrate

Plug the new switch into the wiring harness. Restart the tractor, sit in the seat, and engage AutoTrac to verify the XSC/SSU module registers the operator and the code is cleared.
