John Deere 1504.31 – PTF, SSU, ACU, UIC, TCU, RPT, or XSC: Operator Presence Switch - Condition Exists / Open Circuit

The machine's control software detects an open circuit to the operator presence switch (seat switch), or it stops receiving the seat switch CAN BUS message. The system believes the operator is out of the seat while a function requiring their presence is active, limiting functionality.

   Verify operator position: Ensure the operator is fully seated. Lightweight operators or shifting in the seat over rough terrain can momentarily break the switch contact.

   Inspect the wiring harness: Check the harness leading to the seat switch (under the seat cushion) for pinched wires, chafing, or a disconnected plug.

   Test the switch for continuity: Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test it. Continuity should change cleanly when weight is applied to the switch.

   Check CAN BUS connections: If the switch and wiring are intact, check for a communication loss on the CAN BUS preventing the module from seeing the switch status.

   Safety First

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, set the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Access the Switch

   Tilt the operator seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion (depending on the seat model) to expose the operator presence switch.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the electrical connector from the switch. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or moisture.

   Remove the Faulty Switch

   For twist-lock switches: Push down slightly and twist the switch counterclockwise to release it from the seat pan. For snap-mount switches: Squeeze the retaining tabs and push the switch out. For bolted switches: Remove the two mounting bolts.

   Install the New Switch

   Seat the new switch into the mounting hole and secure it (twist clockwise, snap in, or bolt down).

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the wiring harness, reinstall the seat cushion, and reconnect the battery. Sit in the seat, start the machine, and engage the PTO or AutoTrac system to verify the code has cleared and the system functions normally.
