John Deere 152.16 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Issue With Engine ECU When Module Booting Up / Unexpected ECU Reset Detected / Control Unit Fault
Issue description
This fault code occurs when the engine control unit experiences an unexpected reset due to an internal fault. This is typically caused by a software error, a processor watchdog timer trip, or a physical hardware component failure within the ECU itself. To maintain safety and prevent engine damage, the ECU will typically enter a "limp mode," operating with limited functions (engine derate) until the issue is resolved.

Check the cause
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to the diagnostic port and check the ECU software for anomalies, corruption, or outdated versions
Inspect the ECU wiring harness, battery connections, and ignition supplies to the module for loose pins, corroded grounds, or chafed wires causing intermittent voltage drops
Evaluate the ECU's physical housing for signs of damage, water ingress, or overheating that could trigger internal watchdog resets
Repair steps
Update Software
If a software update or patch is available in Service ADVISOR, reflash the Engine ECU. Clear the codes and run the machine to see if the unexpected reset returns.
Verify Wiring
If the software is up to date, perform a wiggle test on the ECU harness while the engine is running to rule out a physical wiring short causing the reset.
Replace the ECU
If the wiring is intact and the software is current, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Program the New ECU
A replacement ECU will come blank. You must use Service ADVISOR (with an internet connection) to download the correct payload/calibration file specific to the machine's Engine Serial Number and VIN.
System Verification
Conduct operational tests to ensure all system functions are performing correctly and the 152.16 code does not return.
