John Deere 1537 – E01: Reel Fore/Aft Position Sensor or Deck Plate Position Sensor Voltage Too Low

Issue description

The Header Control Unit (E01) monitors the voltage signal from the reel and deck plate position sensors to determine their exact location for automatic header height and position resume functions. Fault code 1537 (specifically 1537.04) is triggered when the control unit registers a voltage of less than 0.5 VDC from the sensor on circuit code 834. This indicates a problem with either the sensor itself or its wiring, which can lead to a failure of the reel or deck plate automatic resume functions.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Reel Fore/Aft Position Sensor and the Deck Plate Position Sensor for chafing, breaks, corrosion, or rodent damage (particularly where wiring runs through the header's main frame tube).

  2. Check the mechanical linkage connected to the sensor's arm for damage, binding, or incorrect installation, ensuring it moves freely throughout its intended range of motion.

  3. Verify live sensor voltage using the combine's diagnostic display (Header Control Unit E01, address 20 for cc# 834). A normal reading is between 0.5 and 4.5 VDC; a reading below 0.5 VDC confirms the fault condition.

Repair steps

  1. Address wiring issues

If any damaged wiring is found during inspection, repair or replace the affected sections of the harness. Ensure all connectors are clean and properly seated.

  2. Adjust sensor linkage

If the sensor's linkage is out of adjustment, it may prevent the sensor from reading the full range of motion. Adjust the linkage as needed (e.g., lengthen the linkage for the deck plate sensor if the voltage is too low).

  3. Recalibrate the sensor

Navigate to the calibration menu on the diagnostic display, select the deck plate or reel position calibration, and follow the on-screen prompts to move the component to its limits and save the new values.

  4. Replace the sensor

If the wiring and linkage are in good condition and the fault persists after recalibration, replace the faulty sensor. After installation, the new sensor must be calibrated.
