John Deere 1546.04 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control) / ClimaTrak™: Water Valve Position Sensor Circuit Voltage Low
Issue description
Triggered when the control unit measures 0 volts (or below 0 volts) at the signal input for the heater valve positioning potentiometer (lead 918 or component B131), indicating a short to ground. This restricts temperature control, resulting in inadequate or no heat.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the heater valve potentiometer (lead 918 / component B131) for signs of damage, chafing, or a short to ground.
Use a multimeter to verify the voltage level at the potentiometer's signal input. A reading of 0 volts confirms a short to ground.
Disconnect the sensor/potentiometer to isolate the fault. If the short goes away, it indicates an internal short inside the sensor itself. If the short remains on the harness side, it indicates a wiring issue.
Repair steps
Resolve the Short
Based on the diagnostic checks, repair or replace any faulty wiring or connectors that are shorting to ground.
Replace the Sensor/Valve
If the wiring harness is intact and the short is internal to the component, replace the HVAC water valve potentiometer or the entire electronic heater valve assembly.
Clear Codes
Restart the tractor or use the CommandCenter select switch to acknowledge and clear the stored communication messages/codes.
System Test
Test the functionality of the ClimaTrak system by adjusting the cabin temperature to ensure the heater valve operates as intended, voltage levels are stable, and the code does not return.
