157.01

John Deere 157.01 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Extremely Low / Low Pressure Fuel Pressure Low

Issue description

This code indicates that the fuel rail pressure has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition signifies inadequate fuel delivery, which can be caused by clogged fuel filters, fuel system leaks, a failing fuel pump, or a faulty sensor. When this code is active, the ECU will typically limit engine power (derate) to prevent stalling or engine damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel level and quality to ensure the tank has adequate fuel and check for water or severe contamination.

  2. Visually inspect the entire fuel system, including lines and fittings, for blockages, kinks, or leaks.

  3. Drain a small amount of fuel from the tank and inspect the sending unit/in-tank screen for foreign material or debris that could be starving the system.

  4. Verify that the low-pressure lift pump (often located near the filters) is operating correctly and supplying adequate flow.

  5. Measure actual mechanical fuel rail pressure using specialized diagnostic tools/gauges to confirm whether the pressure is genuinely low or if the sensor is sending a faulty reading.

Repair steps

  1. Change Fuel Filters

Replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters, and clean the water separator.

  2. Clear Debris & Flush

If the filters were heavily contaminated, drain the fuel tank, clean the suction screen, and perform a fuel system flush using dealer-approved fluid to clear the lines.

  3. Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

If actual pressure tests normal but the code persists, the sensor itself is likely faulty and must be replaced.

  4. Replace Valves

If the sensor is good, replace the Suction Control Valve (SCV) and the Pressure Relief Valve on the fuel rail, as these commonly stick or fail, causing pressure drops.

  5. Replace the Fuel Pump

If all previous steps fail to restore rail pressure, the high-pressure fuel injection pump or low-pressure lift pump has failed and requires replacement.

  6. Reset the ECU

After repairs are made, clear the error codes from the ECU to restore full engine power and verify the fix.
