John Deere 158.03 – Front Chassis Module (PTF): Switched Supply Voltage High

The control unit registers that the electrical system's supply voltage has exceeded the safe operating threshold of 16.0 volts.

   Check the charging system for a failed voltage regulator inside the alternator

   Visually inspect the batteries and alternator for damage, loose connections, or heavy accumulation of debris

   Inspect the wiring harness routing to the Front Chassis Module (PTF) for any shorts to a higher voltage source

   Test Alternator Output

   Start the tractor and use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals while the engine is running at roughly 1500 RPM.

   Evaluate Voltage

   If the multimeter reads above 16.0 volts, the alternator's internal voltage regulator has failed and is overcharging the system. The alternator must be replaced. If the multimeter reads normal operating voltage (typically 13.5V - 14.5V) but the code remains active, the issue lies in the wiring harness or the module itself.

   Harness Testing

   Back-probe the switched power supply pin at the Front Chassis Module (PTF) connector. If the voltage at the pin matches the battery voltage (normal) but the module still throws the 158.03 code, the module has an internal fault.

   Clear Codes

   After replacing the alternator or repairing the harness, restart the vehicle to verify the active service code does not reappear.
