158.12

John Deere 158.12 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): The Engine ECU Has An Internal Issue. Module Did Not Power Down Correctly.

Issue description

This code is triggered when the engine control software experiences an internal malfunction during the shutdown sequence. Specifically, the module fails to complete its proper power-down procedures after detecting a key-off signal.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the battery and ignition voltage supplies to the Engine ECU, checking for voltage drops, loose grounds, or damaged wiring harnesses that could interrupt the power-down sequence

  2. Check the ECU for software errors and ensure it is receiving and responding correctly to the key-off signals from the ignition switch

  3. Evaluate the ECU hardware and surrounding relays (such as the main power relay) to ensure they are not sticking and keeping the ECU awake

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Voltage/Wiring Issues

If the diagnostic checks reveal poor battery or ignition supply voltage to the ECU, repair the wiring harness, clean the ground connections, or replace the faulty ignition relay.

  2. Reset and Reprogram the ECU

If the wiring is intact, connect John Deere Service ADVISOR to reset the ECU. Reprogram/flash the ECU with the latest software update to correct known shutdown sequence bugs.

  3. Verify System Shutdown

Cycle the key and ensure that the vehicle's systems are fully powering down as expected after the corrections are made.

  4. Replace the ECU

If the code persists after verifying power supplies and reprogramming the software, the ECU has suffered a hard internal failure and must be replaced.
