161.11

John Deere 161.11 – PTA / TCU: Sensor for Transmission Input Speed, Signal does Not Match Engine Speed

Issue description

The transmission input speed registered by the transmission controller does not match the engine speed being broadcasted by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) over the CAN BUS network.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6230 Premium
  • 6330 Premium
  • 6430 Premium

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the B61 Sensor Connection: Ensure the sensor is securely connected and examine it for any physical damage or signs of wear.

  2. Check Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor (specifically noting lead 6075, which carries the signal input) for any signs of damage, disconnection, chafing, or shorts to ground.

  3. Verify CAN BUS Communication: Verify that the ECU is properly broadcasting the engine RPM over the CAN BUS to the TCU/PTA.

  4. Test Sensor Functionality: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live transmission input speed. Look for erratic readings or an implausible drop to 0 RPM while the engine is running.

  5. Software Update: Check if the TCU/PTA control unit software is up-to-date, as updates often include improvements in sensor signal processing.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the control modules.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the B61 Transmission Input Speed Sensor on the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect harness

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor, checking the pins for corrosion.

  4. Remove sensor

Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the transmission and pull the sensor out.

  5. Clean mounting port

Wipe the mounting area clean to ensure no dirt or debris falls into the transmission oil.

  6. Install new sensor

Insert the replacement sensor and tighten the retaining hardware to factory specifications.

  7. Reconnect electrical and power

Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear codes and test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 000161.11 code. Start the engine and test drive the tractor, verifying that the transmission input speed now matches the engine speed via live data.
