John Deere 161 – TCU (Transmission Control Unit) / Transmission Module IVT (PTA): Transmission Input Speed Too High
Issue description
Triggered when the control unit detects that the transmission input speed (or engine RPM) has exceeded the maximum safe operating limit.
Applies to these machines

Check the cause
Perform an operational check by reducing ground speed or engine RPM to see if the code clears (often an operational warning rather than a hard failure)
Inspect the B61 Transmission Input Speed Sensor connection to ensure it is secure and check for physical damage
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the B61 sensor (specifically lead 6075) for signs of damage, disconnection, wear, or a short to ground
Verify the sensor is providing accurate RPM readings to the TCU using a diagnostic tool or multimeter
Ensure the TCU control unit software is up-to-date, as updates can improve sensor signal processing
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the B61 Transmission Input Speed Sensor on the transmission housing.
Disconnect Harness
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or moisture.
Remove the Sensor
Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and pull the sensor straight out of the transmission housing.
Install New Sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if applicable) with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the port and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the wiring harness. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the TCU 000161.00 code.
Test Drive
Operate the tractor at varying speeds to ensure the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
