John Deere 162.31 – PTR: High, Low Switch Stuck On

Issue description

The control unit triggers this code when it detects that either the High or Low momentary switch has remained in the actuated (pressed/closed) position for longer than 30 seconds.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the High and Low momentary switches in the cab for proper physical operation, ensuring they are not stuck, damaged, or blocked by debris.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the High and Low switches for pinched wires, corrosion, or damaged pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the switch circuitry for proper continuity and ensure there are no short circuits.

  4. Test the PTR control unit inputs for proper voltage levels when the switches are manually activated and deactivated.

  5. Verify if the PTR control unit software is up-to-date.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Obstructions

Remove any dirt, debris, or physical obstructions around the transmission shift lever and the Hi/Low momentary switches.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the multimeter test reveals a short circuit in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring section and clean any corroded connectors.

  3. Replace the Switch

If the switch is physically broken, fails the multimeter continuity test (stuck closed), or does not spring back properly, remove the faulty switch from the console/lever and install a new OEM replacement.

  4. Update Software

If the physical switch and wiring are perfectly fine, apply any available PTR software updates via John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  5. Clear and Verify

Clear the 000162.31 fault code from the PTR module. Cycle the key, operate the High and Low switches, and monitor the system to ensure the switches function as intended and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Transmission Hi-Low Switch

    CB01504155

Controls electrical circuits to enable or interrupt power flow for the Hi/Low transmission operations.

  • Neutral Safety Start Switch

    RE12411

Related transmission circuit component often replaced during PTR switch diagnostics. Prevents the tractor from starting unless the transmission is in neutral/park.
