John Deere 166.14 – EIC (Engine Interface Control Unit): EIC Control Unit Fault
Issue description
Engine power derate due to a mismatch in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) engine power information. The system detects that the configuration data or VIN programmed into the module does not match the expected engine power parameters, forcing the engine into a derated state.

Check the cause
Cycle the key switch off, wait for the system to power down completely, and restart the tractor to see if the code clears automatically
Check for accompanying codes in the ECU or CCU (e.g., ECU 002006.09 or CCU 000237.02) that could point to a CAN bus communication failure rather than a failed EIC
Using the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool, verify that the VIN and engine power parameters programmed into the EIC match the tractor's actual factory specifications and the ECU data
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors plugging into the EIC module for corrosion, bent pins, or loose connections that could cause data corruption
Repair steps
Attempt System Reset
Turn off the tractor and cycle the battery power. If the code changes from 'Active' to 'Stored,' clear the code and test operate the machine.
Reprogram the EIC
If the code remains active, connect the John Deere Service ADVISOR laptop. Navigate to the EIC configuration page and perform an 'End of Line' (EOL) programming or re-flash the EIC with the correct payload/VIN data for that specific tractor chassis.
Module Replacement
If the Service ADVISOR tool cannot communicate with the EIC, or if the module refuses to accept the correct VIN/configuration data (indicating an internal hardware failure), the EIC module must be replaced.
Post-Repair Calibration
If a new EIC is installed, use Service ADVISOR to flash the new module with the tractor's specific VIN and configuration software before the engine derate will be lifted.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Interface Control Unit (EIC) / EIC Relay Module
Varies strictly by tractor model and chassis serial number. Requires dealer-level software (Service ADVISOR) to program the VIN and engine parameters upon installation.
